Underdog Special on
PBS
Recently, one of our
team members assisted in a film production
of a PBS special called “Underdogs”. The
goal of the show was to take challenging
dogs and train the dogs to perform the job
that it was bred to do. Larry Allen, one of
our team members, took on a feisty young
bloodhound named Holly; a misfit dog that
had already been through six homes by the
age 10 months. With the help of his wife
and rest of the BCTSRT gang, Larry put Holly
through the paces, teaching her to become a
trailing dog. Holly loved her new career
and soon turned her mischief into
productivity. It wasn’t long before she was
well on her way to becoming a wonderful
working hound. Through the efforts of
NorthEast Bloodhound Rescue, she was placed
with the Massachusetts State Police with an
experienced handler who had just lost his
bloodhound partner to cancer. Within six
weeks, Holly was certified and on the
streets, helping to apprehend criminals as
well as find lost children.
For Holly, it was a
dream come true, a real success story. For
Larry, it was an accelerating experience.
“It’s wonderful to watch a dog blossom when
she gets to do the job that she was born and
bred to do. Holly is a special dog. It was
hard to let her go but wonderful knowing
that she was going to such a great home.”
